Does The Atkins Diet Really Work? A Brutally Honest Review

Discovered in the 1970s by Dr. Robert Atkins, the Atkins diet claims to help individuals lose weight through a change of eating plan. The main idea behind it is that most people are eating too many carbohydrates in the form of sugar, flour and corn syrups – and that a shift is necessary if one wants to lose weight. But does the Atkins diet really work? Is there any truth to back its claims? In this Atkins diet review we seek to examine the truth behind its basic principles and assumptions.

Low Carb Diet Plan

This is a low diet plan, it entails consumption of low carb foods for quick weight loss. However, despite being restrictive on carbohydrate intake, fat consumption is slightly allowed. The thought behind it is that by using a natural approach, the body will be forced to burn fat for energy as it will be supplied with minimal amounts of glucose.

With a diet plan consisting of cheese, fish, good fats, eggs, meat and a decent portion of good carbs a person can look forward to losing about 10 to 30 pounds of weight in the first month. Generally, meal plans for this diet consist of a four phase model – starting with induction phase, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and ending with lifetime maintenance.

(1)The Atkins Diet Induction Phase

This phase lasts for about 14 days, during which carb intake is limited to about 20 grams per day. The claim is that one can lose about 15 pounds in the first two weeks. This may happen because the body is coerced to burn fat as carb intake is severely restricted during this phase.

During this first phase, you must avoid carb-rich treats such as cakes, biscuits, crisps, fizzy drinks, pastry, croissants and chocolate. This also means ditching potatoes, milk, rice, bread and restricting yourself to less than 10% of your normal carbohydrate consumption.

In contrast, you can still eat fish, chicken, red meat, eggs and butter. The main goal of the induction phase is to get your body to switch from breaking down carbs to breaking down fats.

This phase lasts for about 2 weeks but this can vary depending on how fast and how much fat you want to lose. The rule of the thumb is to stay in this phase until you are 15 pounds from your ideal weight goal.

(2)Ongoing Weight Loss Phase

This phase allows you to slightly increase your carbohydrate intake by 5g daily for a week at a time. You should do this until you identify your Critical Carbohydrate Level (CCL) for losing weight. The CCL is the maximum amount of carbs you can eat every day to lose 1 to 3 lbs per week. For some, this may be 30g, for others it might be 50g. Nevertheless, carb consumption is still lower than most of us are used to and really only allows for the introduction of a handful more nuts, fruits and veggies. Rice, potatoes, pasta and bread are still put off limits.

This phase should last until you are 10 pounds from your ideal weight goal.

(3)Pre-maintenance Phase

When you lose the required amount of weight, you then enter the third stage of pre-maintenance. In this specific phase, you learn what your body metabolism can handle and what it cannot. You increase your carb intake by 10 grams each day for a week at a time. Ideally, this is meant to slow down your weight loss to less than 1 lb a week in an effort to prepare your body for the last phase.

By now you are expected to start including small amounts of traditional starchy food such as pasta, bread and porridge (in tiny amounts). For instance, just 30g cooked pasta or 40g cooked brown rice would be enough to provide you with 10g of carbs per day.

(4)Lifetime Maintenance Phase

During this final stage, you have to remember that even though the variety of foods that you can eat has increased, you still have to control the amount consumed. Do not slip away into your former eating habits. You are expected to learn to control your cravings so you don’t consume more than what is required of you – in order to prevent recurrent weight gain.

You need to limit your carbs to less than 90g per day – which is roughly a third of what you eat during a normal day. In other words, you'll be following this diet plan for a lifetime.

Atkins Diet Approximate Weight Loss

The scientist behind this diet plan claims that you can expect to lose 6-10lb during the first two weeks. This should however slow to 1 to 3lb per week once you enter the second and successive phases. During the final phase, lifetime phase, you can expect to lose about 1lb per week at best.

The main benefit is that you can lose significant amounts of weight quickly – and this can be very motivating. Thanks to the diet’s allowing plenty of high fat butter, red meat, mayo, cheese and cream, one has many eating options.

Soy protein is usually higher in fiber than whey and lower in carbs so this protein would be an ok one to use if you are trying to lose weight.

I don't really recommend taking a soy protein all of the time due to the fact that their have been some studies about soy causing estrogen cancer within women and some showing that it can actually help prevent it, so this is a very controversial subject and I just recommend taking it in moderation until more is known on the subject. Hemp Protein

Hemp protein powder is great because of a few reasons being that it is a plant protein it's a great alternative to soy and is appealing to fellow vegans ( we offer vegan skinny fiber capsules by the way ) It also offers inflammation relief due to offering omega 6 fatty acids and is high in fiber content. My wife and I have been with Skinny Fiber or rather Skinny Body Care (SBC) for 3 years now as independant distributors.

I can safely say that out of the many home based businesses out on the market today that this has easily been the best one that we have joined.

Now before you start off saying that you have read other reviews about the Skinny Fiber business please note that you will find some that are positive reviews and some that are negative reviews and this is simply because it is like starting an actual business. The tools and training you get from your upline sponsors really matters if you are going to be successful or not.

A good way to look at this is that not all franchise restaurants perform as well as the next and even though they are a franchised business they still go out of business for one reason or another, but the franchise or brand itself still stays in business.

The Skinny Fiber home business is much like this in it's own sense, other than not being a brick and mortar location.

I remember when we first started we too were scared and were not sure of what to do as already trying a few other home businesses that just didn't work out for us.

The debate is on! Who gains more weight men or women after being Married or Divorced?

If you have been married you know life is great and everything is going good and then you have a good ole cake smash in the face. Yep the married life is great, but for some it can be overwhelming.

You know it's about only 50% of marriages work in the United States and the other half well they get divorced and it can be stressful and so can being married. Let's find out how this can be a factor when it comes to your weight.

Now there has been studies showing that weight gain and weight loss is different for men and women, but that both gain weight while being married or or being divorced and yet again it affects each gender differently.

Let's compare to see what these subtle changes are and find out exactly how weight gain is affected by both.

Researchers from Ohio State University were able to find that it was women who gained more weight than men after you eat the wedding cake yes after marriage. Now the funny part is that men gained more weight than women after a divorce.

There has been other studies that showed men and women as a couple and studied their average weight gains and losses.

A sociology professor Zhenchao Qian and one of his students Dmitry Tumin wanted to break down the effects of weight gain by gender to see and understand if marital changes affect men or women differently than each other.

They study data that was given from a nationally representative, which included more than 10,000 men and women that were at the age of 140 to 22 when the study started in 1979. This was a very long survey in which time they where questioned every year until 1994 and then every 2 years after that.

So after looking at the documentation they found that after two years of being married women had actually gained more weight than men and saw that both had gained more weight than those who had stayed single.

With two years of being separated both genders ended up weighing more than those who had stayed married, however men had actually gained more weight than women.

They think the reason behind this is because husbands are pushed by their wives to live healthy lifestyles while being married and after a break up they pack it back on.

Women though tend to actually eat more after being married because of the stress that comes along with child bearing and keeping up with the household activities.

New 2015 Scientific Study Shows Fiber Helps With Weight Loss

A study shows Rats fed a fiber supplement while on a high fat and high sugar diet show a much lower weight gain than those who did not eat the fiber.

The University of Clagary did a study where rats were fed fiber supplements while at the same time being on a high sugar and fat diet. The surprise is that they had showed a lot less weight gain than the ones that did not eat the fiber.

Keith Sharkey deputy director of the Cumming School of Medicine's Hotchkiss Brain Institute says That their data shows that a very small dietary change using a prebiotic oligofructose fibre, (which is a soluble fiber like Glucomannan that Skinny Fiber has in it) actually reduced weight gain and could actually help with the long term effect and maintenance to help lower your weight even while being faced with current diet issues, (such as having a sweet tooth).

Now what the real kicker is with this study is that no matter the fact that the rats were eating foods that were extremely high in fats and sugars they actually gained one third less than thoses who where in the control group. It also didn't matter if they had genetics working against them either they still showed a significant difference from those who didn't eat the fiber supplements.

Cluny thinks that because of the fiber that the rats were taking it helped with their microbiota (bacteria) that lives in their guts match those who had a lean muscle mass and also to help some of the hormones that are also in the gut that handle food intake.

The funding for the new study was produced by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and also by the Alberta Innovates Health Solutions. The study was then published in the April edition of the journal, Obesity.
