Clonidine is a medicational treatment that’s used in order to help people who suffer from high blood pressure problems. People suffer from this condition for various reasons. Some of them are as follows:
Family history. There are people who no matter what they try to do in order to keep their blood pressure under control, they’ll find it stays high. If this is the case medication is needed in order to ensure it doesn’t reach dangerously high levels.
Bad habits. Some people consume a lot of processed foods that are high in sodium. This leads to high blood pressure. It becomes even worse when a person doesn’t get enough water in order to flush the salt from their body.
Anger issues. Strong emotions such as anger or stress can cause blood pressure to rise. And the more it happens the closer you bring yourself to certain health risks as a result.
Clonidine is able to lower the amount of specific chemicals in a persons blood that will lead to lower blood pressure. It can also enable the blood vessels to relax and allow for your heart to have an easier time beating slowly and easily.
There are two different brands of this medication. The first (the Catapres brand) is used in order to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) the second brand (Kapvay) is used in order to help treat problems such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Clonidine can sometimes be given with other medical treatments in order to make it work better as well.
If you have to take Clonidine, then what are some of the more common side effects you’ll be at risk for as a result?
Serious allergic reactions (in this case look for symptoms of allergic reactions such as hives, a hard time breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat)
Feeling tired or irritable
Dry mouth, loss of appetite
Dry eyes, contact lens discomfort
Sleep problems (insomnia), nightmares
What are some of the more serious side effects a person might put themselves at risk for as a result of using Clonidine?
Severe chest pain
Shortness of breath
A very slow heart rate;
Severe headache, pounding in your neck or ears, blurred vision
Anxiety, confusion; or
A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
The above is a long list of potential side effects, but doesn’t include all the side effects you might be at risk for if you take Clonidine. This is why it’s going to be important to monitor yourself while on this treatment and if anything occurs that shouldn’t or that wasn’t mentioned here, then be sure to get in contact with a doctor for advice or speak with a pharmacist.
Clonidine works well and as long as it’s taken the right way, then there’s no reason to worry about most of the serious side effects. Proper storage is going to be important, which is included on the packaging as well as how to best take it for optimal effectiveness.
