Unisom is a brand name for series of sleep aids containing diphenhydramine and doxylamine. Both these drugs are antihistamines commonly prescribed to alleviate symptoms of allergies.
How It Works
Unisom products contain one of these two chemicals as active ingredients: diphenhydramine or doxylamine.
Doxylamine is a first generation antihistamine. The primary function of antihistamines is to reduce the body’s reaction to allergies. These pharmaceutical drugs act against histamine receptors in the body, which are stimulated by allergens and produces symptoms like runny nose and hives. Doxylamine is also used as a mild sedating agent to induce sleep. It’s the sedative found in NyQuil.
Diphenhydramine is also an antihistamine mainly prescribed to treat allergies. It is sometimes prescribed to treat insomnia and symptoms of common cold. Antihistamines like diphenhydramine can aid sleep for people who may suffer from allergy-like symptoms at night that prevent them from falling asleep.
Diphenhydramine and doxylamine is used topically to treat allergic reactions following insect bites, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac and minor cuts that swell. Oral versions of these drugs are prescribed to treat hay fever, cold symptoms, common allergies, motion sickness and insomnia.
Unisom mainly contains these drugs to treat insomnia and similar sleeping problems. The active ingredients reduce the histamine levels in the body, which causes drowsiness. Doxylamine in addition also reduces acetylcholine levels in the body, which can make a person feel drowsy even more. Unisom is a fast acting sleep aid.
Unisom is prescribed to treat people who have trouble falling asleep. Restless sleepers, insomniacs ad pregnant women who find it difficult to fall asleep will benefit from Unisom. It should be noted that Unisom is not a cure for chronic sleep conditions like insomnia. The drug only provides temporary relief.
