Description

Xalatan, also known as latanoprost, is a medication prescribed to reduce pressure inside the eye. This drug is normally prescribed in the treatment of certain types of glaucoma or other conditions in which increased pressure in the eye is a result.

How it Works

Essentially, latanoprost, the active ingredient in the drug, works to reduce the eyes’ internal pressure. This is done by triggering an increase in the amount of the fluid draining from the eye.

Uses

Xalatan is used mostly with glaucoma patients. A doctor will prescribe this medication to effectively reduce ocular hypertension in patients with open-angle glaucoma or closed-angle glaucoma.

Dosage

This medication comes in the form of an eye drop. Normally, a doctor will recommend a single drop in the affected eye on a daily basis, typically in the evening. If a dose has been missed, wait until the next dose and continue to use as normal. The medicine takes effect around three or four hours after administration. Remove contact lenses before putting in the drop and reinsert only after at least 15 minutes have passed.

Side Effects

There can be side effects in some cases, although most should not require medical attention. However, if you feel a major discomfort or if the effects do not pass in some time, you may need to speak with a physician. Mild indications may include:

 Burning sensation in the eye
Feeling as though there is something in the eye
 Itching eyes
 Stinging eyes
 Dry eyes

If a more severe indication presents, it is best to seek medical assistance promptly. Effects of this nature include:

Crusting, swelling, redness, pain, or discomfort in eye or eyelid
 Cough or difficulty breathing
 Tightness in chest
 Noisy breathing
 Shortness of breath
 Swelling of the eye
 Wheezing

Precautions

Never leave contact lenses in while using this medicine as it can damage or discolor the lenses. Note that long-term use of this solution may cause a change in eye color or changes to growth and thickness of the eyelashes over time.
Be careful not to allow the dropper to touch anything else, including eyes or hands; this can contaminate the dropper and cause and infection to your eye, which in turn can be dangerous.

If you are using any other eye drops prescribed by the doctor, wait for at least 5 minutes after using Xalatan before using the other drops.

Make sure to discuss with your doctor if you have had any previous conditions, especially of the eye, so that the doctor may decide whether Xalatan is best for your current condition.

Also mention to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or soon intend to be. This is important as it is not yet known whether the chemical in this drug passes through breast milk or if it can harm an unborn fetus.

Self Care

Follow the instructions on the packaging for administering the drops or as explained by your doctor. Make sure to adhere strictly to the schedule and the dosage prescribed by the physician.

Store any unopened bottles of these eye drops inside a refrigerator. After opening, you may keep the bottle at room temperature, provided it is away from heat or light and moisture. Make sure the bottle is tightly closed.

Refrain from using the drops if it has been more than 6 weeks since opening the bottle, and contact your doctor to obtain a new prescription.
